Jennifer M. Sawa
Jennifer Sawa is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists and is an active member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. She received her Master of Arts in Counselling from McGill University in 2007. Additionally, Jennifer has trained with leaders in the field of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), and Expressive Arts Therapy (EA). Jennifer has considerable experience in these areas and has facilitated DBT skills groups, graduate groups and has supervised others in learning DBT.
She offers individual treatment for adolescents and adults, utilizing interventions which have been demonstrated to be highly effective in treating individuals that react with intense emotions, suicidality, self-harming behaviours, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, and major life transitions.
Jennifer offers DBT – informed therapy, which supports clients through demanding situations by teaching them problem solving strategies and coping skills. It is particularly effective at supporting high conflict personalities, and mental health concerns that have been resistant to medication. Similarly, it can be helpful assisting legal counsel’s clients to be better equipped to handle the emotional demands of litigation.
Her PE Therapy supports survivors of trauma and those diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It also reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression and avoidance that can be particularly troublesome for trauma survivors, including sexual abuse survivors.
EA Therapy is another orientation Jennifer utilizes when appropriate. It may include visual arts, along with writing, sound/music, and movement. EA is helpful when verbal expression is difficult. Art can be healing and help individuals discover their inner strengths and resources.
Jennifer has over ten years’ experience working in the Mental Health field, and has a special interest working with the LGBTQIA community. She is a strong proponent of evidence-based approaches to therapy and tailors her therapeutic services to suit her clients. Jennifer offers evening appointments.
